Set just north of Marseille, Grand Littoral is easily accessible and attracts on average nine million visitors per year and is the largest shopping centre in southern France. In fact; it is one of the first shopping centres within the whole of France. SKR Lighting Design worked with architects Design International to refurbish the retail destination.
Before SKR Lighting Design were brought on board to help with the refurbishment, the shopping centre was using old lighting technology for all of its general functional lighting. This was not only visually unattractive, but it also consumed excessive amounts of energy. SKR Lighting Design studied the existing lighting scheme and the updated architectural proposals from Design International. We spent time calculating which lighting layouts and lighting products would be most suitable. On-site mock-ups helped inform the final decision.
SKR Lighting Design introduced a colour changing lighting scheme for the architectural elements within the project. By doing so, a sense of character was introduced and the malls were brought to life! New ceiling coves were detailed with concealed linear colour change LED tape, that can subtly change throughout the day and night. Architectural voids were filled with light, attracting attention to otherwise forgotten aspects of the project. Escalators were made fresh with new lighting components. An entertainment lighting system was integrated, allowing for performances, promotions, and other spectacles.
For projects of this scale, using a lighting control system is absolutely essential. The lighting control system controls the luminaire output, times of operation, colours (where applicable) and relays any maintenance issues. It is also essential for energy consumption issues. For the majority of our complex retail projects we produce “scene schedules” along with a “lighting control schedule” to instruct the lighting control system integrator on what to program into the system. By utilising a lighting control system, the energy and maintenance costs are significantly reduced.
