Residential refurbishment of English countryside house. Completed in 2017; a warm and welcoming atmosphere was wanted by the homeowner. SKR sensitively worked with the existing parts of the building and help create new contemporary lighting elements.

Founded in AD678, Hexham Abbey is one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England and remains at the heart of the town to this day.

As with all heritage projects, the design process is delicate and must be handled sensitively. Neil Skinner was principle lighting designer on this project between 1999 – 2002. Pragmatic solutions were required to illuminate the Abbey, using both theatrical and architectural lighting techniques. Installation locations and cable routes were an issue that were overcome by designing a new spotlight specifically for the project, in partnership with lighting manufacture Light Projects. The spotlights were created for easy of maintenance, maximum flexibility and architectural discreet mounting. Leading decorative lighting supplier Chelsom provided the project with new and updated chandeliers which enhanced the elegance of the space.

As a place of serenity and worship, creating a welcoming and calm environment is absolute key within the project. Without an appropriate lighting control dimming system, the lighting project would not work. By using a control system, to adjust the light levels and set various scenes for services and events, the various spaces throughout the Abbey are scene set to appropriate light levels. This means that depending on the event occurring or daylight ingress levels, the intensity of the artificial light is adjusted accordingly. By using the lighting control system, vast amounts of energy is saved, along with running and maintenance costs.

Posnania, named after the town Posnan in Poland is a destination shopping centre and it’s one of the most significant investments by APSYS, the commercial property developer.

In collaboration with AND Architects and Signify Lighting we are proud to present this spectacular project, designed not only for the purpose of retail but also to be enjoyed as a day out in the historical city of Posnan.

The vast volume of the building is filled with natural day light, it’s bright and inviting, walking along the passageway the central skylight follows along, sunlight flooding the interior and reflecting off the glass shopfronts. Suspended from high level are various pieces of bespoke art installations, ranging from floral hangings, back illuminated decorative pendants and human shaped sculptures suspended in mid-flight. The crystal forum designed by Preciosa is a spectacular part of Posnania, thousands of ceiling mounted crystals in various shapes and sizes beautifully reflect and refract light creating a mesmerising atmosphere. Using Color Kinetics LED technology, the work of art comes to light and shines in a colourful hue, adding a touch of magic to the shopping experience.

The appreciation for art in Posnania starts outside, the visitors are greeted by an oversized statue of Lucie designed and created by a Belgian sculptor David Mesguich. It represents his daughter, a 4-year-old girl seen drawing the sun, a symbolising the future and being able to transform it into something positive.

Transitioning from daytime to dusk and evening, the lighting scheme was designed to maintain the brightness of the space. Using high output, warm white LED adjustable downlights, we filled the space with light, featuring the carefully selected finishes.

To be able to adequately illuminate the ground floor areas exposed by large voids above, we discreetly surface mounted spotlights on the inner facias of voids to be able to light down and feature sitting areas, trees, and kiosks.

Integrated linear lighting within coves follows the sweeping curves of the passages, exposing their organic shapes and draws your eye to follow the various architectural elements, adding an extra layer of depth and attention to detail visible throughout the project.

Within the high-end Crystal Forum court at Posnania, a large focal point was required. SKR went about the brief and worked alongside architects and interior designers to develop a very large ceiling feature that would eventually become Europe’s largest!

SKR began the design process for the chandelier and followed the project through until commissioning. By coordinating with special chandelier company. SKR worked up a design which would be a spectacle during both day and night hours. Suspended cylindrical pendants were designed to have different textures, which would each react slightly differently to daylight. At nighttime colour changing projectors illuminate on to and through the pendants, allowing endless possibilities to create colourful scenes within the Crystal Forum.

State of the art multi-media screen as the centre piece at the foyer entrance to Posnania is 11m tall, suspended from the ceiling and is visible from both the outside and internally from the mall spaces and food court. It is it the mesh structure that gives the screen the transparency and lightness and the especially engineered pixel pitch of 25x25mm or smaller, displaying advertising, games and digital messages. It its designed for the content to be displayed during daylight hours and dimmed after dusk as part of the overall lighting control system.
